Eggshell Re-Planter 2024

The Eggshell Re-Planter is a handcrafted plant pot made from repurposed consumer eggshells. Created from our unique EggshellCeramic© material, each pot is rich in calcium carbonate, a valuable nutrient for both plants and soil. Designed to function as a growing cup, the planter releases essential nutrients back into the earth during repotting, enriching the soil and supporting plant growth. The product also functions as a durable pot for indoor plants. The biodegrading process is made possible to microbes and insects in the soil, this process will not start during indoor use of the product.

The Eggshell Re-Planter is not only a sustainable product, but it also encourages the cultivation of homegrown plants and vegetables, contributing to the reduction of food waste by returning valuable nutrients to the soil. One Eggshell Re-Planter contains enough calcium for 0,5m2 soil. The eggshells will be released from the pot in humid soil in 3 to 4 weeks. The planter contains a natural coating on the inside and bottom of the pot. The coating will naturally biodegrade in the earth over a period of 9 tot 11 months. During this process, the coating become softer and flexible, making it possible for strong roots to pop through.

Our design received an Honorable Mention Award at the Design Intelligence Award (DIA) 2024, an international competition that celebrates innovative, sustainable design solutions. The DIA brings together entrepreneurs, creatives, and innovators worldwide who are addressing society’s most pressing challenges and improving people’s lives through design.

The first series of Eggshell Re-Planters will be unveiled at the Ambiente Talents Fair 2025 and are part of several exhibitions by Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen. Tip for long-lasting use of the product: Keep the outside of the pot dry; place the product indoors, outdoors under a roof, or in a greenhouse.
Tip for direct repotting into soil: Make a small hole in the bottom of the pot to break the waterproof layer. This will prevent rainwater from accumulating inside the pot. This can be done with scissors.
