Meraki 2024

Meraki is a new surface system created with our Eggshell Ceramic material. The Inspiration for the design comes from fungus growing on old wood. This natural process is showing the circle of life which has been a guideline in the development of the Eggshell Ceramic material.

Our first application is a standing object which can be used as a room divider. The wooden object is completely modular and can easily be assembled or disassembled. In this way the product can be shipped in a small box to reduce its footprint. Nevertheless, when the product isn’t used anymore all elements can be placed within the correct recycle method. The Eggshell Ceramic elements can be added to a compost bin. This will be beneficial for the soil as it then returns it calcium back to nature.

With this surface system we offer fully compostable art objects for indoor use. The product is highly durable when used in dry indoor environments. Next to a room divider, Meraki can also be applied as wall object. All elements can be placed on different spots on the wooden base and can be turned to left, right, up or down.

We understand not all products will be used for a lifetime, for this reason we made a lot of effort on informing the correct re-use of the materials. Italian designer Sara Bendandi has translated the story of this project into 3D visuals and illustrations to make an easy understanding of the product use, its afterlife and future interior applications.

The development of this product was co-funded by WORTH Partnership Project of the European Commission. The wooden frame is made from European Douglas fir and coloured with linseed oil by Linolie & Pigment. Find more information in this publication: Worth Booklet.
